Feminine Gospels - Wish

How does Wish fit into ‘Feminine Gospels’?
Feminine Gospels conveys a feminist view on the stereotypes of women and Wish portrays a conventional approach towards depression. A feminist view would suggest that the oppression women face in society is similar to society’s attitudes towards mental illness. Duffy’s past experiences and traumas could be traceable within the behaviours of the characters. Psychoanalysis could suggest that she is expressing her unconscious desires and weaknesses by disguising them within Feminine Gospels. There is also an evident connection between Duffy’s Wish and Andrew Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress. The underlying dark imagery found in both poems can be interpreted, despite varying messages, as it can viewed that Wish is Duffy’s feminist response to Marvell’s evidently misogynistic, hedonistic tone in To His Coy Mistress. The dark imagery of “graves” and “sly worms” mirrors the “marble vault” and the “worms that try that long preserv’d virginity” in Marvell’s poem.
