Feminine Gospels - Wish
As composed by Year 13:
How does Wish fit into ‘Feminine Gospels’?
Feminine Gospels conveys a feminist view on the stereotypes
of women and Wish portrays a
conventional approach towards depression. A feminist view would suggest that
the oppression women face in society is similar to society’s attitudes towards
mental illness. Duffy’s past experiences and traumas could be traceable within
the behaviours of the characters. Psychoanalysis could suggest that she is
expressing her unconscious desires and weaknesses by disguising them within
Feminine Gospels. Descriptions of “her bare feet walk along the gravel path
between the graves” is
There is also an evident connection between Duffy’s Wish and Andrew Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress. The underlying dark
imagery found in both poems can be interpreted, despite varying messages, as it
can viewed that Wish is Duffy’s
feminist response to Marvell’s evidently misogynistic, hedonistic tone in To His Coy Mistress. The dark imagery of
“graves” and “sly worms” mirrors the “marble vault” and the “worms that try
that long preserv’d virginity” in Marvell’s poem.

As a class you need to use your shared writing skills to create a three paragraph response to this question about Othello:
How is love presented as a changing element in the play you have studied?
Enjoy - get competitive!

Useful revision tool for Feminine Gospels
I recommend printing, laminating and keeping somewhere you will look at it and admire everyday. I have one in my office in the staff room. Lucky me :-)
